Isn't it true that nothing comes without little help from your friends? And nowhere does this seem to be truer than in getting a job! When I look back at the course of my career... and its been VARIED, I find that I've had maybe one position that I got without the aid of someone "on the inside" saying nice things about me to the the owner of the company.
What is this really saying? Well, at least in MY experience, a person can belong to as many job boards as they want and apply to or cold call about as many positions as they want, and pretty much nothing is going to come from it, unless there is an "insider" you know to put that bug in someone's ear.
That's where Social Media comes into play. Sites like LinkedIn and even Facebook provide ample services to aid finding those key people in your past who would love to help out, and the best thing is you strengthen a friendship you might have otherwise not nourished. In the end, Social is about what you add to a community, not take from it.
