Gotta get back on the wagon...

OK, so here I am again, it's been almost two years since my 1st and only post and in that time I've been working on a film and as the Creative & Experiential Director for a Social Media company in CA. Its been an interesting ride...

As I said in my first post, its all about the who you know and not where you "see a lead." That's also the lesson of the Social Media scene. Never before have people so far from one another been able to be so close to each other. The trick is how does one cultivate relationships and make connections that are mutually beneficial without becoming some "hey how are you? What can you do for me?" type of person? We've all met these kinds of folks in real life... what do you do to both avoid them and avoid BEING them in the virtual life of the online sphere?

I'm planning on ramping up my twitter usage and reaching out to people on facebook more often as well as blogging more as the coming weeks progress... Brushing up on my CSS probably won't hurt either. Keep an eye out!

Ya' gotta know someone...

Isn't it true that nothing comes without little help from your friends? And nowhere does this seem to be truer than in getting a job! When I look back at the course of my career... and its been VARIED, I find that I've had maybe one position that I got without the aid of someone "on the inside" saying nice things about me to the the owner of the company.

What is this really saying? Well, at least in MY experience, a person can belong to as many job boards as they want and apply to or cold call about as many positions as they want, and pretty much nothing is going to come from it, unless there is an "insider" you know to put that bug in someone's ear.

That's where Social Media comes into play. Sites like LinkedIn and even Facebook provide ample services to aid finding those key people in your past who would love to help out, and the best thing is you strengthen a friendship you might have otherwise not nourished. In the end, Social is about what you add to a community, not take from it.
